January 25 Microsoft BI Strategy UpdateFrom Nic Smith on the Microsoft BI team: http://blogs.msdn.com/bi/archive/2009/01/23/microsoft-bi-strategy-update.aspx Hi everyone, I wanted to provide an important update on the Microsoft BI strategy! For over ten years we’ve been on a mission to deliver BI to everyone in the organization, and have made strides towards achieving this goal through the broadly adopted tools of SharePoint, Excel, and the SQL Server BI platform. Based on customer feedback, we’re announcing today that Microsoft is consolidating the scorecard, dashboard, and analytical capabilities from PerformancePoint Server into SharePoint Server as PerformancePoint Services, making these capabilities available to millions of SharePoint users around the world. This move helps us extend our vision to deliver BI more broadly to everyone in the organization at a lower total cost of ownership. Our customers keep telling us—my IT spend is not going up—how can you help me? Well, help has officially arrived! Now you might be wondering what will happen with rest of PerformancePoint Server? In mid 2009, we will release PerformancePoint Server 2007 “Service Pack 3” which will include updates to the product’s planning module. Thereafter, our customers and partners should not expect further investment in standalone versions of PerformancePoint Server. Throughout this process the support of our planning customers is our top priority. But in the end, these changes enable our customers around the world to deploy a complete BI solution in many cases with existing investments in SharePoint Server, SQL Server, and Excel, the most widely used analysis and planning tool in market today! Want more information? Take a few minutes and watch this video with Guy Weismantel, Director of Microsoft BI. In it, Guy explains these changes and the future value Microsoft customers will gain from this strategy. Thanks, March 13 Jason Morales' Microsoft BI Update v.18 - MarchContents:

February 09 Microsoft Gets Gartner's Business Intelligence Top RankingMicrosoft Gets Gartner's Business Intelligence Top Ranking
The company makes a surprise leap ahead of Business Objects and Cognos in its ability to execute on BI products and pricing.
Business Objects and Cognos have long been considered the leaders in business intelligence platforms. But in a surprising new report, Gartner
ranks Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) ahead of those companies in its ability to execute.
February 08 New Microsoft BI Blog on MSDNWelcome to what we hope will become the definitive blog on business intelligence, THE BI Blog. Not too huge of a goal or vision, huh? There are already some great blogs out there on all different aspects
of business intelligence and performance management--from those dedicated to showing how to build applications, to those that take a more business oriented approach to the discipline of BI and EPM. Our expectation is that we'll have a little bit of both sides
of the fence represented in this blog as we kick-it off and establish what's fast becoming the biggest community in the industry around Microsoft BI solutions.
Microsoft is doing some great things in business intelligence, and whether it's from the customer, partner, developer, implementer, or marketing side of things, we'll be on top of it here to ensure you're up
to speed on this fast growing business.
Off we go!

December 18 Office Hours: How Bill Gates uses OfficeBill Gates
People are often curious about which applications and technology I use, and if there are features in the new version of Office that have changed the way I work. Without a doubt, the 2007 Microsoft Office system enables me to get my work done more easily
and quickly than before.
If you visit my office, you will probably notice right away that I have three large flat screen displays that sit together and are synchronized so they work like a single very wide display. The large display area enables me to work very efficiently. I
keep my Outlook 2007 Inbox open on the screen to the left so I can see new messages as they come in. I usually have the message or document that I'm currently reading or writing in the center screen. The screen on the right is where I have room to open up a
browser or look at a document that someone has sent me in e-mail.

PerformancePoint At Last: Q&A With Microsoft's Alex Payne and Michael Smith
After four years in development and more than a year in beta testing, Microsoft PerformancePoint is finally shipping. Intelligent Enterprise discusses what the platform delivers and what critics are saying with two key executives who helped guide development,
packaging and pricing.
By Doug Henschen
In one of the most high-profile enterprise software product launches this year, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 was finally released to manufacturing on September 20. To hear more about what the platform delivers and get Microsoft's take
on what critics and competitors are saying, Intelligent Enterprise sat down last week with Alex Payne, Director, Office Business Applications, and Michael Smith, Director of Marketing, Office Business Applications. Is this version 1.0 product ready for your
enterprise? Two executives who helped guide development, packaging and pricing make the case for PerformancePoint.
September 14 New Case Study: Skanska Leverages Performance Management to Benefit Bottom-LineSkanska Leverages Performance Management to Benefit Bottom-Line
Business planning and forecasting are important business activities in just about any organization.
“In our industry, the profit margins can be very aggressive and budgeting accurately is essential,” says Allen Emerick, Director of IT, Applications and Integration at Skanska’s
Charlotte, North Carolina office. “To meet or exceed those margins, you need to understand where you are and where you’re heading.”
With as many as 1,500 projects ongoing, Skanska operations teams prepare the plans and forecasts that outline the timelines, milestones and costs of each project, which
span an average of two years. The operations team generates hundreds (sometimes thousands) of Excel reports for each project. Every month, the operations teams compare the project’s current status against the plans and projections to make sure the project is
on time and on budget. The operations teams’ ability to create, maintain and access so many reports is an ongoing challenge.
“At every stage of the process, our ability to accurately project, anticipate and control costs, then anticipate and react to issues is vital.” says Andy Hough, Director
IT, Managed Services, Skanska.

Energizer Taps Into the Power of Microsoft Business Intelligence with Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007
Posted: 09/05/2007
The path to performance management Business planning and forecasting are critical business activities at Energizer Holdings, Inc., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dry
cell batteries and flashlights, and the second largest manufacturer of wet shave products under the Schick and Wilkinson Sword brands. Energizer’s annual business forecasts set the direction for the company’s activities in the year ahead – from inventory and
product promotion to customer relations and retailer sales contracts.
“At the end of the day, business planning and forecasting is all about delivering shareholder value,” says Energizer’s CIO Randy Benz, who works
out of the company’s headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. “And you achieve this by improving profitability.”
For Energizer, the ultimate goal is to get the right product through the correct channel with the right promotional mix to meet the needs of the
individual buyer. But these factors constantly evolve as consumer behaviors change and competitive and channel bargaining power shifts occur. Thus, the planning process needed to be dynamic enough to adapt to these factors.

reading “Managing in a Time of Great Change” is probably one of the fastest ways to ramp on those concepts, many of which are as relevant today as they were 15 years ago (some even more so, surprisingly) The upside of its being out-of-print is that you can buy copies on the internet for less than a dollar right now; for those that do buy this book it’ll probably be one of the highest ROI investments you’ll ever make J http://www.amazon.com/Managing-Great-Change-Peter-Drucker/dp/0452278376 The worldview of management guru Drucker is carefully thought out and simply composed, which makes his works easy to digest. Similar to his Managing for the Future (LJ 1/92), this book is a collection of essays and articles previously published in well-known periodicals since 1991. Drucker selected pieces that received positive responses and made them into chapters arranged by four topics: management, information-based organization, the economy, and society. In some instances, a few essays were lengthened, and the epilog was written strictly for the book. Executives and longtime Drucker aficionados will particularly enjoy having these well-regarded essays in one package. Highly recommended for all business collections. --Rebecca A.
