    Microsoft BI Strategy Update

From Nic Smith on the Microsoft BI team: http://blogs.msdn.com/bi/archive/2009/01/23/microsoft-bi-strategy-update.aspx

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to provide an important update on the Microsoft BI strategy!  For over ten years we’ve been on a mission to deliver BI to everyone in the organization, and have made strides towards achieving this goal through the broadly adopted tools of SharePoint, Excel, and the SQL Server BI platform. Based on customer feedback, we’re announcing today that Microsoft is consolidating the scorecard, dashboard, and analytical capabilities from PerformancePoint Server into SharePoint Server as PerformancePoint Services, making these capabilities available to millions of SharePoint users around the world. This move helps us extend our vision to deliver BI more broadly to everyone in the organization at a lower total cost of ownership.  Our customers keep telling us—my IT spend is not going up—how can you help me?  Well, help has officially arrived!

Now you might be wondering what will happen with rest of PerformancePoint Server?  In mid 2009, we will release PerformancePoint Server 2007 “Service Pack 3” which will include updates to the product’s planning module. Thereafter, our customers and partners should not expect further investment in standalone versions of PerformancePoint Server.  Throughout this process the support of our planning customers is our top priority.  But in the end, these changes enable our customers around the world to deploy a complete BI solution in many cases with existing investments in SharePoint Server, SQL Server, and Excel, the most widely used analysis and planning tool in market today!

Want more information?  Take a few minutes and watch this video with Guy Weismantel, Director of Microsoft BI. In it, Guy explains these changes and the future value Microsoft customers will gain from this strategy.

    Thanks,
    Nic

New Microsoft BI Blog on MSDN

Welcome to what we hope will become the definitive blog on business intelligence, THE BI Blog.  Not too huge of a goal or vision, huh?  There are already some great blogs out there on all different aspects of business intelligence and performance management--from those dedicated to showing how to build applications, to those that take a more business oriented approach to the discipline of BI and EPM.  Our expectation is that we'll have a little bit of both sides of the fence represented in this blog as we kick-it off and establish what's fast becoming the biggest community in the industry around Microsoft BI solutions.
Microsoft is doing some great things in business intelligence, and whether it's from the customer, partner, developer, implementer, or marketing side of things, we'll be on top of it here to ensure you're up to speed on this fast growing business.
    Off we go!

Office Hours: How Bill Gates uses Office

    Bill Gates

People are often curious about which applications and technology I use, and if there are features in the new version of Office that have changed the way I work. Without a doubt, the 2007 Microsoft Office system enables me to get my work done more easily and quickly than before.

If you visit my office, you will probably notice right away that I have three large flat screen displays that sit together and are synchronized so they work like a single very wide display. The large display area enables me to work very efficiently. I keep my Outlook 2007 Inbox open on the screen to the left so I can see new messages as they come in. I usually have the message or document that I'm currently reading or writing in the center screen. The screen on the right is where I have room to open up a browser or look at a document that someone has sent me in e-mail.

    Hurrah! PerformancePoint is here:

PerformancePoint At Last: Q&A With Microsoft's Alex Payne and Michael Smith

After four years in development and more than a year in beta testing, Microsoft PerformancePoint is finally shipping. Intelligent Enterprise discusses what the platform delivers and what critics are saying with two key executives who helped guide development, packaging and pricing.

    By Doug Henschen

In one of the most high-profile enterprise software product launches this year, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 was finally released to manufacturing on September 20. To hear more about what the platform delivers and get Microsoft's take on what critics and competitors are saying, Intelligent Enterprise sat down last week with Alex Payne, Director, Office Business Applications, and Michael Smith, Director of Marketing, Office Business Applications. Is this version 1.0 product ready for your enterprise? Two executives who helped guide development, packaging and pricing make the case for PerformancePoint.

New Case Study: Skanska Leverages Performance Management to Benefit Bottom-Line

Skanska Leverages Performance Management to Benefit Bottom-Line
Business planning and forecasting are important business activities in just about any organization.
“In our industry, the profit margins can be very aggressive and budgeting accurately is essential,” says Allen Emerick, Director of IT, Applications and Integration at Skanska’s Charlotte, North Carolina office. “To meet or exceed those margins, you need to understand where you are and where you’re heading.”
With as many as 1,500 projects ongoing, Skanska operations teams prepare the plans and forecasts that outline the timelines, milestones and costs of each project, which span an average of two years. The operations team generates hundreds (sometimes thousands) of Excel reports for each project. Every month, the operations teams compare the project’s current status against the plans and projections to make sure the project is on time and on budget. The operations teams’ ability to create, maintain and access so many reports is an ongoing challenge.
“At every stage of the process, our ability to accurately project, anticipate and control costs, then anticipate and react to issues is vital.” says Andy Hough, Director IT, Managed Services, Skanska.

    Energizer
Energizer Taps Into the Power of Microsoft Business Intelligence with Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007
    Posted: 09/05/2007

    The path to performance management
Business planning and forecasting are critical business activities at Energizer Holdings, Inc., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dry cell batteries and flashlights, and the second largest manufacturer of wet shave products under the Schick and Wilkinson Sword brands. Energizer’s annual business forecasts set the direction for the company’s activities in the year ahead – from inventory and product promotion to customer relations and retailer sales contracts.
“At the end of the day, business planning and forecasting is all about delivering shareholder value,” says Energizer’s CIO Randy Benz, who works out of the company’s headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. “And you achieve this by improving profitability.”
For Energizer, the ultimate goal is to get the right product through the correct channel with the right promotional mix to meet the needs of the individual buyer. But these factors constantly evolve as consumer behaviors change and competitive and channel bargaining power shifts occur. Thus, the planning process needed to be dynamic enough to adapt to these factors.

CTP3 of Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 is now available!

If you’ve joined the Microsoft Connect site for PerformancePoint you may have gotten the notice below about the availability of CTP3. If you haven’t joined the PerformancePoint Connect program…

    What are you waiting for?

    Greetings,

CTP3 of Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 with new Monitoring and Analytics functionality is now available!
We are proud to announce the ENU (English) release of Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 CTP3 software! This release contains new, updated Monitoring and Analytics functionality. See the "What's new from PerformancePoint Server CTP3" document from the following Connect site for the details. Note that we will be introducing a new Monitoring SDK next week to the site (under documentation Zip File).
The Planning bits however will remain at CTP2 level of functionality (until the full-update CTP4 which arrives in August).
Note that CTP3 will also be available in localized languages German and Japanese in about 4 weeks time - look for a separate announcement on this.
    MSConnect and Download
You can download the files within the "Download" section of Microsoft Connect (https://connect.microsoft.com/default.aspx). Prior to getting access to the download page you must take the mandatory survey (if you haven't already) and agree to the Licensing terms. We encourage all CTP members to actively use the newsgroups and feedback section for assistance and to provide feedback/submit bugs regarding the CTP3 software release. Additional product information about Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 can be found at www.microsoft.com/performancepoint.
    Newsgroups
You will now have access to two newsgroups:
    Microsoft.beta.office.performancepoint.monitoranalyze (Concerto and ProClarity questions)
    Microsoft.beta.office.performancepoint.planning (Biz# questions)
The first newsgroup, for monitoring and analytic questions, will be replacing the previously established "Concerto" newsgroups. For those that have already signed up to participate in this newsgroup the changes should take no more then four simple steps. Within Outlook Express select Tools, Newsgroups, click on Microsoft.beta.office.performancepoint.monitoranalyze and then subscribe. For those that have yet to sign up for the newsgroups, please follow the directions found on the Microsoft Connect site, under "Newsgroups" to add this new account to your newsgroup reader.
The second newsgroup, for planning questions, will be replacing the previously established "Biz #" newsgroups. For those that have already signed up to participate in this newsgroup the changes should take no more then four simple steps. Within Outlook Express select Tools, Newsgroups, click on Microsoft.beta.office.performancepoint.planning and then subscribe. For those that have yet to sign up for the newsgroups, please follow the directions found on the Microsoft Connect site, under "Newsgroups" to add this new account to your newsgroup reader.
    Feedback
The feedback and bug forms have been updated. The next time you supply feedback or bugs to the CTP team, you will be able to specify which product your feedback is for, what build you are working with, and what company you represent. We encourage you to provide as much detail such as error messages, and steps to reproduce the issue to increase the resolution time on all feedback and bug issues.
Please do not hesitate to contact your PerformancePoint Server 2007 CTP team members at ppsadmin@microsoft.com. If you have any questions regarding the newly updated newsgroup and feedback functions.
Receiving e-mail messages from programs in which you are a participant is a mandatory part of your participation on Microsoft Connect. Unified Communications and your business application solution

Surely you’ve been on an intranet site or reviewing a report and you see someone’s name who you’d like to reach out to.

Imagine if it were possible to:

    - See the person’s availability status
    - Call the person using VOIP from your laptop or using your office phone
    -
Send the person an instant message
    -
    Send the person an email
    -
See the person’s Office location so you can walk over for a chat
    -
Check the person’s calendar and schedule a meeting
    - Look up that person’s information in your Outlook address book or corporate directory
    - Do some other pre-defined action from your current context

Would you believe you could do this all TODAY using Microsoft Office Live Communication Server?

    You can!

Learn more and download the trial version of Live Communication Server here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/communicationsserver

If you’re building out a Duet solution, a Microsoft BI solution, or a custom solution, you can take advantage of the native functionality in Internet Explorer and Outlook for presence information.

Below is a sample HTML page with icons and scripts showing how you can integrate Microsoft Office presence information and functionality into anything with a modern HTML reader, such the one that comes in Outlook (see screenshot below).

Many thanks to Ramesh for putting together the sample. Interestingly, Ramesh was originally on the Duet team in 2005 and moved over to the Microsoft BI team; I was originally on the Microsoft BI team and moved over to Duet some years later.

Understanding Corporate Performance Management for $1

If you’re serious about having conversations with professional managers around corporate performance management an understanding of some of its key underlying principals can be invaluable; reading “Managing in a Time of Great Change” is probably one of the fastest ways to ramp on those concepts, many of which are as relevant today as they were 15 years ago (some even more so, surprisingly)

The upside of its being out-of-print is that you can buy copies on the internet for less than a dollar right now; for those that do buy this book it’ll probably be one of the highest ROI investments you’ll ever make J

The worldview of management guru Drucker is carefully thought out and simply composed, which makes his works easy to digest. Similar to his Managing for the Future (LJ 1/92), this book is a collection of essays and articles previously published in well-known periodicals since 1991. Drucker selected pieces that received positive responses and made them into chapters arranged by four topics: management, information-based organization, the economy, and society. In some instances, a few essays were lengthened, and the epilog was written strictly for the book. Executives and longtime Drucker aficionados will particularly enjoy having these well-regarded essays in one package. Highly recommended for all business collections.
